To edit general settings for your chat, go to the chat settings page and click General.

Chat Description#

Provide a general description about your chat so users know what the chat is about.

Your chat description shows up below your chat name when the chat is loaded directly.

If your chat is listed, this also helps it show up in search engines.

Show message history to users when they join#

This shows the last 40 messages sent in the chat when users join the chat.

This helps provide the context of the current conversation to any new user that joins.

In some cases, you may want to disable this for privacy reasons.

By default, this option is turned on.

How should nicknames for first-time users be handled?#

By default, nicknames are completely randomized for new users.

This option allows you to change the default names that are given to new users, or set it so that new users must enter a nickname before joining.

If you change this option, it will not apply to existing users that have visited the chat before.

They will have to change their name manually.

How should sounds for first-time users be handled?#

By default, there is no sound when a message is sent in the main chat or in direct messages for new users.

Users can always change these preferences on their own.

This option allows you to change the default preference, so every new user that joins will use the setting here.

For example, you can set it so that every new user that joins the chat will by default have sounds turned on for direct messages that they receive.

This can be helpful if you expect to direct message new users often.

In most cases, it's recommended to leave this off as new users may find sounds annoying.

Should "hide bad words" be enabled for new users?#

By default, bad words are hidden for new users.

They can modify this in their preferences on their own.

This option allows you to change the default preference, so every new user that joins will use the setting here.

For example, you can set it so that every new user that joins the chat will by default see bad words instead of them being hidden.

Maximum length of a message?#

You can change the maximum length of a message in the range of 250 - 10,000 characters.

For most chats, 1,000 characters is recommended as some users may abuse the larger limit to spam the chat.

How many un-ranked users can join on same IP Address?#

Most users have a unique IP address.

If you expect a lot of users to be joining from the same IP address (e.g. if they are sharing the same network), you can raise the limit.

Should users be allowed to delete their own messages (regardless of rank)?#

If enabled, this option allows users to delete their own messages.

We recommend leaving this off as users may post offending messages and then delete them, making it harder to moderate.

Moderators can always see deleted messages, however there is an additional step to view them as they have to select an option to view the deleted message.

Is your chatroom designed, or owned by, users between the age of 13-18?#

To protect users, please select the relevant option here if your chat is designed or owned by users between the age of 13-18.

Please also keep in mind that users under the age of 13 are not allowed in your chat.
